Hard vs Soft Enamel Badges

One of the most common questions we receive from our customers is “What’s the difference between your soft and hard enamel badges?”.

The simplest answer is that hard enamel pins have a smooth polished feel whereas soft enamel pins have a textured ridged feel.

They are both made from the same die-struck mold and the detail is achieved in a similar way but the finished look and feel is very different.

Hard Enamel Badge Details

Hard enamel badges are die-struck and then filled with vitreous enamel. They have smooth, polished surfaces and are the highest-quality enamel badge products. Hard enamel pin badges are die-struck and then filled with vitreous enamel. The enamel is added several times to completely fill the badge to the same level as the metal die lines. It’s then heated and polished leaving the badge surface smooth to the touch. It is the highest quality enamel badge due to its hardness, robustness, and its smooth surface.

Soft Enamel Badge Details

Soft enamel badges are hand-painted with cold enamel. These badges have a recessed look and feel, and are coated with a clear resin that protects the badge surface. Soft enamel pin badges are hand-painted with cold enamel and do not require firing. The enamel sits in the recesses between the metal die lines giving it a recessed look. Once finished you are able to feel the metal ridges of the borders surrounding each colour. A clear resin is then added to the top to protect the badge.

Vitreous Enamel and Cold Enamel

Vitreous Enamel
Vitreous enamel, also known as porcelain enamel, is made by fusing powdered glass into a die mould by firing it in an oven. This process turns it into a liquid, then once cooled the excess enamel is linished (smoothed) off and the next colour is added.

Cold Enamel
Cold enamel, also known as soft enamel, is a pigmented epoxy resin that is hand-painted onto your soft enamel badge. Unlike Vitreous Enamel, Cold Enamel can exactly match your brand’s Pantone colours.
